Zurich has a lot to see and dob, with its stunning lakeside setting and wondaful gothic architecture. After having my flight cancelled, and having an extra day to spend in the city, I asked the locals at the hotel to see where I could use that extra day for a short trip out of the city. Uetliberg was the recommendation from them all.

Uetliberg is a mountain close by to the south east of the economic hub, rising 870m above sea level. The easiest way to get there it by taking the Uetliberg Express from the central train station, a scenic 20 minute journey up the mountain side and forests. A return ticket cost 8.80 CHF.

Being at the end of the line, it’s impossible to miss your stop, so just relax and enjoy the winding journey up. The station itself is rather cosy, with a café if you would like a quick break. That’s the first part done, second is the hike up! Follow the path going up, signs will mark Uetliberg, so it’s not too hard to miss, but if in doubt, just follow the crowd! The stroll up isn’t too demanding, though there are several steps when the path isn’t smooth.

Take in the magical forest as you make your way to the top. make sure to take in the sights when there is a gap in the trees, to the city below. A small glimpse into what to expect as you press onwards! The path does start to split as you go up, but follow the signs for the restaurant Uto Kulm, which is at the summit (more on that later!)

You’ll eventually arrive at the top, where you’ll find a hotel, with probably the most awesome spot in the city! There is an observation platform here, to take in the stunning views from up here. The city along the shores of Lake Zurich. with the mountainous terrains surrounding the entire region. But if you want to go even higher, and heights are not an issue for you, there is a tower that you can go up, to get an even more astounding view. Though there is a small fee to get to the top of the tower.

The fee is absolutely worth it, the alpine panoramic landscape is truly a sight to behold. I was lucky to go on a clear, summer day, and you are treated to a spectacle that sums up Switzerland, mountains, lakes and natural beauty. The wind can be a bit tricky up here, so do be careful!

Before the trip back down, I had to check out the restaurant for a spot of lunch, and I have to say, this is probably one of the most stunning views I’ve even had from a restaurant. You really could spend hours relaxing and enjoying the ambiance. The prices do match the settings, so expect high prices, but hey, treat yourself! The walk back down is far easier as you would expect, with the trains every half hour, do time your return, as otherwise, you’ll have a good wait for the next train back!
