Exploring Haji Lane: Singapore’s Most Colourful Neighbourhood

Tucked away in the vibrant Kampong Glam district, Haji Lane is a hidden gem bursting with colour, character, and creativity. This narrow alleyway may seem unassuming at first glance, but step inside and you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of eclectic boutiques, quirky cafés, and ever changing street art. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local enjoying a staycation, Haji Lane offers the perfect blend of heritage and modern culture, making it a must-visit destination in Singapore.

While the glitz and glamour of Marina Bay often steal the spotlight when people think of Singapore, it’s easy to overlook the many other sides of this remarkable city state. Reaching this colourful neighborhood from Downtown is simple: hop on the efficient MRT and travel to Bugis station. From there, it’s just a short ten minute walk to the heart of Haji Lane, if you see Arab St, you’re on the right path!

We arrived early in the morning, so most of the cafés and boutiques were still closed. However, the quirky photo booth shops were already open, something we don’t come across very often back home in the UK. We spent some time trying out the airplane-themed booths, which were cleverly designed to resemble an aircraft cabin. Wandering through the vibrant alleyways, surrounded by bold murals and striking street art, provided a refreshing contrast to the sleek skyscrapers and polished waterfront of Marina Bay. It was a welcome change of pace and offered a glimpse into a different side of Singapore.

For lunch, we stumbled upon a charming Indonesian restaurant nearby called Kulon. Having never tried Indonesian cuisine before, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but the food was absolutely delicious. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we’re now seriously considering a future trip to Indonesia. As the afternoon heat intensified, we cooled off with refreshing iced lemonades before heading to one of the area’s most iconic landmarks: Sultan Mosque. With its magnificent golden dome and intricate architecture, it stands proudly at the centre of the neighbourhood. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times, and it’s well worth taking the opportunity to step inside and admire its beauty.

I’m so glad I had the chance to explore this part of Singapore. It’s a side of the city that can easily be missed on a typical itinerary, yet it offers so much charm, culture, and personality. If you’re looking to venture beyond the usual tourist hotspots, Haji Lane is a destination that absolutely deserves a place on your Singapore bucket list.
